Weihai Vocational College, a full-time Institution
of Higher Education which enrolls students in Shandong Province, was
set up in October 2000 under the approval of the Shandong Provincial
Government. Formally recognized by the Ministry of Education, it is
among one of the first ten Vocational Colleges opened in Shandong
Province.
Located in Huancui District of Weihai City, which boasts beautiful
sceneries and pleasant climate, the college occupies an area of
169,000 square meters, with a floor space of 65,000 square meters
and has a total fixed asset of RMB 81,510,000 Yuan. It is well equipped
with a total of 44 laboratories of various kinds, including laboratories
for experiments, workshops for practicing practical career skills,
computer labs, language labs and multi-media classrooms. Also among
its modern facilities is an up-to-date campus network for education
and teaching.

The college consists of 7 departments, a modern A-V center along
with the Adult Education Division and Secondary Vocational Education
Division. The 7 departments are: the Department of Information Technology,
the Department of Electronic Engineering, the Department of Business
Administration and Economics, the Department of Applied Chinese
Languages, the Department of Applied Foreign Languages, the Department
of Education Administration and the Department of Art and Design.
The college offers 21 disciplines on the Junior college level, which
are: Computer Science and Maintenance, Applied Electric Engineering,
Communication Engineering, Numerical Control Technique and Application,
Mechanical Engineering, Marketing, Accounting, E-Commerce, Business
Administration, International Trade and Finance, Modern Secretarial
Studies, Chinese for Foreigners, Advertising, English for Business
and Trade, Korea for Business and Trade, Hotel and Tourism Management,
Cooking, Law, Fashion Design and Making, Art and Decor Design and
Music. The college now has over 7000 enrolled students, 3085 of
which are studying full-time on campus. Among its 366 staff members,
there are 184 full-time teachers. 115 of the staff are Professors
and Associate Professors. In addition to this, the college also
employs 53 part-time teachers.
Focusing on the development of the teaching staff, the development
of disciplines and Course Structure and the construction of its
infrastructure, the College has now formed its unique pattern of
operation—“taking Higher Vocational Education as the mainstream
along with the development of career skill training for employment
and Higher Education for Adults while at the same time trying to
promote itself to an Institution offering undergraduate programs.”.
By offering a wide range of practical and professional oriented
Associate Degree programs, the College “provides well qualified
work force with practical professional skills and abilities for
such sectors as manufacturing, administration and service.” In recent
years, the College has also actively engaged itself in providing
educational programs in collaboration with both Chinese and foreign
Universities. It has conducted various academic and cooperation
exchanges with educational institutions in the U.S, the U.K, Australia,
ROK and Japan. The College has gained the approval of the Shandong
Provincial Government and is qualified to take overseas students.
The College has now initiated its relocation project in accordance
with the development plan of Weihai City. Upon completion, the new
campus will cover an area of 3300 Chinese Mu, accommodating 15,000
students. The college is now working at further improving the qualify
of teaching, developing the disciplines, promoting research and
management, expanding the scale of profit and image-making in the
hope that in 5-10 years’ time, it can become one of the leading
vocational colleges in Shandong Province in terms of overall performance
and capacity as well as one of the best all over China with its
own distinctive characteristics, offering 40 disciplines, some of
which are to be among the best ones available in Vocational Colleges
in China and to be further promoted and articulated to undergraduate
disciplines.
